Meet the 2023 Honorees

YOUNG URBANISTYOUNG URBANIST

Aaron DeMayo is a multi-disciplinary designer integrating natural solutions within the built environment to create more regenerative cities and sustainable coexistence of humans with Planet Earth. Born and raised in Miami, Florida, Aaron has seen the City transform into a bustling Subtropical Metropolis. Having worked with many companies in diverse roles that help shape the built environment, he has developed a holistic understanding of a city’s complex processes, allowing him to work across various scales and typologies. As Founder of Future Vision Studios, he oversees projects, including architectural design, urban planning, mobility, landscape, and zoning policy.

Currently, Aaron serves as the Chair of the Underline Advocacy Committee, whose objective is to support The Underline’s efforts and advocate for safer connections to The Underline and the Miami Loop. In addition, Aaron is a member of the Traffic and Mobility working group, where he has assisted in ensuring adequate protected bicycle facilities and proper pedestrian crossings.

Aaron is also the Chair of the Urban Land Institute Young Leaders Group Resilience Subcommittee. In 2022, he co-led an effort to review the Miami 21 Task Force Recommendations Report. The result is the Miami 21 to 2100 White Paper, Zoning Recommendations for a more affordable, resilient, and sustainable adaptation of Miami.

Aaron serves as the District 2 Seat for the City of Miami Climate Resilience Committee, whose role is to recommend to the Commission changes to the City Code and policy that will help the City thrive in the face of all climate change threats. Storm surge, sea level rise, flooding from king tide, and extreme rain events, although influenced by different weather and climate events, are all related and must be addressed comprehensively across scales. Aaron created the Connect and Protect Miami project to begin the conversation and plan for these issues.

Meet the 2023 Honorees

VISIONARY AWARD

Jessica Goldman Srebnick, Co-Chair of Goldman Properties, is a second-generation company leader founded by her late father, visionary real estate developer Tony Goldman. Founded in 1968, the award-winning company is a creative real estate firm with a storied history in developing thriving global destinations across the United States. Marrying real estate and public art to build community, Goldman Properties is known for recognizing the value in depressed urban areas and transforming them into iconic neighborhoods such as SoHo in New York City, Center City Philadelphia, Miami Beach, and Wynwood, site of the acclaimed Wynwood Walls, winner of the 2016 “Global Award of Excellence”- Urban Land Institute. In August 2018, Goldman Srebnick was recognized as one of Forbes Icons of Impact for her continued work and leadership. She oversees a diverse portfolio of restaurants, office buildings, galleries, commercial and retail properties, and large-scale public art projects, including the iconic Houston Bowery wall.

In July 2015, Goldman Srebnick founded Goldman Global Arts (GGA), a Miami-based creative collective with co-founder artist Peter Tunney. In 2019, Goldman Srebnick authored Walls of Change: The Story of The Wynwood Walls. In 2020, GGA was hired by the NFL to infuse street art into Super Bowl LIV in Miami. She also most recently curated a national art campaign for Michelle Obama’s organization When We All Vote to amplify the importance of voting.

Goldman Srebnick is an active Young Presidents Organization (YPO) member. She graduated from the YPO/Harvard Business School Presidents Leadership Program. She was the Miami-Dade County Co-Chair for the Miami 2020 Super Bowl Host Committee and currently serves as Chair of the Town Square Neighborhood Development Corporation (TSNDC) Board.

Meet the 2023 Honorees

LEGACY AWARD

Two Generations of Cervera Women

Over 53 years, Alicia Cervera has breathed life into new communities and revitalized existing ones.

Early in her career, she proved that vision and determination paid off. Born in Peru in 1930, the daughter of a Peruvian ambassador, in 1954, she married Javier Cervera, a Cuban plantation owner. With two daughters born in Havana, she immigrated to the United States in 1961 due to the Cuban Communist Revolution, where her son Javier was born in 1967.

Seeing the extraordinary potential of Brickell Avenue, in 1966, she and her husband purchased a piece of waterfront property that they had rezoned for multiple residences; this was the first official high-rise zoning in the area, the Brickell Avenue corridor.

In 1980 Ms. Cervera was joined by her daughters, Veronica Cervera Goeseke and Alicia Cervera Lamadrid; together, they grew Cervera Real Estate into a full-service organization.

As dynamic and active as ever, she thrives on sharing her secrets to closing and the art of negotiation. Yet not only the current generation benefits from her wisdom and savvy. Ms. Cervera has left an indelible footprint on South Florida's colorful real estate landscape, placing undying resolve, honesty, integrity, and the constant quest for knowledge at the forefront of success.

Meet the 2023 Honorees

HONORARY URBAN WARRIOR

Dorothy Jenkins Fields, Ph.D.
A lyric voice for the black history of South Florida, Dorothy Jenkins Fields has devoted her life to preserving the heritage of the African-American community and raising awareness of African-American history to a national level. A Miami native, she is responsible for the establishment of Miami’s Black Archives, the designation and restoration of the landmark Lyric Theater and other historic sites, the creation of the Black Heritage Trail, and the designation of the Historic Overtown Folklife Village as a National Trust “Main Street” community. Fields was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Humanities for her unprecedented research and documentation of African-American history.

A teacher and educator for Miami-Dade County Public Schools for more than 30 years, Fields began her career in 1964 after graduating from Spelman College. Then, in 1974, in preparation for the nation’s bicentennial, she began a search for curriculum materials on the black experience in South Florida. When she was unable to find any information about South Florida’s black history in any school or public library, she embarked on a journey that would become her lifelong professional mission.

The first step in her journey was to establish The Black Archives, a nonprofit manuscript, and photographic repository for the legacies of Miami’s black community. She was assisted in her effort by University of Miami history professor Gregory Bush, who introduced her to the field of public history. Later she earned her certification in archives administration at Emory University, a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction at the University of Northern Colorado, and a Ph.D. in 20th-century African-American history, historic preservation, and public history from The Union Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Stephanie Morales Casariego is a mother of two small children, a registered architect and is one of the two founding principal architects of CSpace Architecture and Design.

Stephanie is currently the Secretary/Treasurer of AIA Miami and chairs the Small Firm Exchange committee.

AIA Fort Lauderdale, AIA Palm Beach, AIA Miami and

AIA Fort Lauderdale, AIA Palm Beach, AIA Miami and FLDCP chapters are joining together for the 4th Annual Soccer Tournament. This is a family- oriented event that will bring design and construction-related fields together for a fun day of healthy competition and constant networking!

The Tournament will take place at the Soccer Town Outdoor fields near Pembroke Pines. The venue will include three 60’ x 108’ outdoor fields a beverage center for drinks, and food trucks as well as a space for vendors to showcase their products and services. The Tournament will consist of 16 teams composed of architects, architectural emerging professionals, architectural students, engineers, contractors, and vendors.

During the length of the tournament, all players and sponsors will have the opportunity to network with attendees from Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami as well as to reconnect with existing contacts. As a family-oriented event, kids are welcome to enjoy the fields when available as this will be a close door event.

After all games are completed, an award ceremony will honor the first, second, and third places as well as the single-player with the most goals scored and the best goalie!

Things to Note
AIA Team must have at least (5) players that are current AIA or FLDCP members or allied members to qualify for team pricing (Proof of active AIA membership required)
A team is to be composed of a minimum of eight (8) and a maximum of ten (10) players
All team members must be 16 years or older.
The deadline to register is March 23rd

Things to Bring
It will be a full day of physical activity and constant networking, therefore don’t forget to bring:
- Energy
- Business cards
- Soccer shoes (no cleats)
- Towel
- Shin Guards (optional)
- Outdoor Chairs (seating is limited)
- Umbrellas
- Team shirt color. We encourage all teams to coordinate their shirt color prior to the event.
- Sunblock
- Morning coffee, water, and lunch will be offered for all players and guests. If your teammates require additional snacks and special beverages we urge you to consider bringing them individually

Wesley Kean is the Principal, Creative Director & Founder of KoDA. @koda_miami

He views architecture as a mechanism to improve the social, cultural, and environmental issues facing cities.

His writings on the subject of how metabolist ideas can potentially solve sea-level rise vulnerability have been published in AIA’s Florida/Caribbean Architect magazine, and he has lectured on the topic at the University of Miami. As an architect and an urbanist, Kean feels a particular responsibility to serve his community.

Steven Fett Architecture, Inc. is an architectural design and planning firm located in downtown Miami. Established in 2004, projects range from small to mid-sized custom residential, commercial and civic architecture, to large-scale master plans for neighborhoods and cities in the United States and abroad.

Steven is also a full-time lecturer at the University of Miami, School of Architecture. as well as an assistant director of the School’s Center for Urban and Community Design.

Henry Rueda is Chair of the Department of Architecture at @fiu_soa. He has taught in undergrad and graduate schools at Universidad José María Vargas, Universidad Central de Venezuela, and Universidad Simón Bolívar in Caracas. He has also lectured in multiple universities across Latino America and the US. Henry’s academic interests are focused on Public Space and cultural buildings as social catalysts among communities.

His professional experience includes working for Jesus Tenreiro in Caracas, Venezuela, and Wiel Arets Architects in Maastricht, Holland. His current architectural practice focuses on single family residences in different cities in Venezuela and South Florida.
