The AIA Miami Design Awards are intended to encourage excellence in architecture, elevate public consciousness of good design, and recognize those architects whose work enriches our built environment.

Projects will be reviewed with the AIA Framework for Design Excellence; how the project betters the community and environment in which it resides.

All entries must be architectural projects designed by AIA Miami licensed architects or licensed architects with offices in Miami-Dade County or Monroe County. Projects may be located anywhere in the world and built projects must have been completed by January 1, 2023.

Projects may be submitted for recognition in the following categories. The jury may move a project to a different category, upon their discretion.

Framework for Design Excellence: The architect's call to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public has a new and broader meaning amid challenges such as increasing climate extremes and social inequity. Architects everywhere must recognize that our profession can harness the power of design to contribute to solutions addressing the most significant needs of our time. Every project can be used as a platform for addressing big problems and providing creative solutions. Every line drawn should be a source of good in the world.

The Framework for Design Excellence represents the defining principles of good design in the 21st century. Comprised of 10 principles and accompanied by searching questions, the Framework seeks to inform progress toward a zero-carbon, equitable, resilient, and healthy built environment. These are to be thoughtfully considered by designer and client at the initiation of every project and incorporated into the work as appropriate to the project scope. The Framework is intended to be accessible and relevant for every architect, every client, and every project, regardless of size, typology, or aspiration. Each submission will be reviewed with the Framework for Design Excellence in mind.

BUILT PROJECTS
Architecture: Less Than 50,000 SF
Recognizes any type of commercial, industrial, or residential project that exemplifies design excellence, sustainable responsibility, innovation, thoughtfulness, and technique.

Residential Architecture
Residential projects include single-family houses and multi-family projects up to 20 units. Large scale apartment or condominium projects must be submitted under architecture.

Affordable Housing
Recognizes any project from single- to multi-family that fits within the parameters of true affordability. Both public and private projects are eligible.

Renovation / Restoration
Recognizes restoration, renovation, or rehabilitation to existing buildings, including. adaptive reuse. A detached addition to an existing building should be submitted under architecture.

Interior Architecture
Encourages excellence in interior architecture, elevates public consciousness of good design, and recognize those whose work enhances the interior built environment.

Divine Detail/Material & Building Technology
Recognizes architectural ingenuity in the use of a particular material, detail, or building technology; and/or the use of an innovative material or detail in a traditional application bringing about improved results.

The use of building technologies that enable the implementation of design and construction excellence through a seamless integration, as well as the improved management and use of the building.

UNBUILT PROJECTS: Less than 50,000 sf
Recognizes outstanding examples of recent, commissioned architectural designs not yet built or complete, as well as to identify non-commissioned projects that exemplify excellence in design while exploring nature and science of the profession.

Construction must not be substantially complete prior to submission date.

UNBUILT PROJECTS: Greater than 50,000 sf
Recognizes outstanding examples of recent, commissioned architectural designs not yet built or complete, as well as to identify non-commissioned projects that exemplify excellence in design while exploring nature and science of the profession. Construction must not be substantially complete prior to submission date.

URBAN DESIGN
Recognizes excellent solutions to urban design these projects must have an active client. Submittals may include urban design projects, planning programs, civic improvements, environmental programs, and redevelopment projects.

Portions of the project must be under implementation; however, the whole project does not need to be completed. If not completed, project description must include implementation schedule. All entries must be projects designed by licensed architects with offices in Miami-Dade County or Monroe County.

STUDENT DESIGN
Entries must represent the firm’s last ten years of architectural work, as well as statements of the firm’s participation in educational programs, involvement in community service, service to the profession, and AIA Miami. Entries must include material which best describes the firm’s achievements, maintenance of an inclusive culture, community involvement, and AIA involvement. Include a minimum of one image with a brief narrative per project (minimum of five projects).

The Firm of the Year must be rounded with involvement in not just one or some, but all of the above.

TEST OF TIME
This award recognizes distinguished single works of architecture and planned developments affecting more than one building, after a minimum period of 25 years has elapsed in which the function, aesthetic statement, and execution can be reassessed. Further, it is the intent of the program to recognize works that, by the influence of their design, have informed or affected the evolution of that design typology.

Note: submission must be by architect of record of original work.
