Speaker: Vaughn Schauss

Description:
Wind-borne debris protection is a building code requirement in many coastal areas prone to hurricanes as a means of protecting people and property during a storm. In those areas, impact resistant glazing is part of the window or door system. Failure to protect openings can result in interior damage, business interruption, and potential mold problems. The worst-case scenario is a build-up of internal pressure leading to catastrophic building failure. Industry standards, including the ASTM E1886 Test Method and the ASTM E1996 Specification are reviewed in the presentation, including test requirements based on wind zone and type of protection required (basic vs. enhanced). Laminated glass interlayers are an important part of the glazing design. This course addresses both PVB and ionoplast interlayers used in systems designed for impact performance. In particular, ionoplast interlayers are stiffer and more tear resistant than PVB interlayers and offer better open-edge durability. These laminates go into glazing system that are wet- or dry-glazed, depending on the wind zone and the individual system. Dry-glazed systems eliminate the use of sealants and offer a cost savings in terms of labor and materials. Besides providing impact resistance, hurricane glazing systems comply with building code energy performance requirements and offer other security benefits.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn about the building codes and standards that regulate glazing in wind-borne debris regions
  • Identify testing requirements, including missile impact and pressure cycling for systems
  • Learn about the benefits of impact systems for essential facilities
  • Recognize the performance attributes of laminated glass interlayers used in impact systems
  • Become aware of other considerations, including energy performance, intrusion, bomb, and tornado resistance
