Next month, join AIA Miami’s Hard Hat Tour Committee, FDOT and GMX for a hard hat tour of the I-395/SR 836/I-95 Project. This project is a partnership between the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the Greater Miami Expressway Agency (GMX) Construction is expected to be completed in late 2027 at a cost of $840 million.

The location will be on Watson Island, and the address is TBD. We will notify you of the address closer to the tour date.

- This is a ticketed event

- Note that there will be a lot of walking.

- This is a hard hat tour, so wear work boots and hard hats.

- Note: This is for industry professionals ONLY. No students or general public are permitted.

- Space is extremely limited.

MEET THE 2025 AIA MIAMI CHAPTER

With professional experience in Los Angeles, New York City, and Miami, Michelle has a strong cross-disciplinary approach to Architecture and the built form. She graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture from SCI-Arc Southern California Institute of Architecture and a Master's Degree in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University GSAPP - where she was awarded the William Kinne Fellows Traveling Prize.

During her time at Columbia, Michelle was an advisor to her peers and actively involved in Career Services; reviewing portfolios and resumes, visiting firms, and discussing interviewing techniques. At SCI-Arc, she taught a Construction Documents course as well as a Design Introductory Program for incoming students. Her career has been a balance between Architectural Design, Architectural Education, and Career Development.

She is a Licensed Architect in NY and FL and is currently a Project Manager at Kobi Karp Architecture and Interior Design, an award winning firm and member of AIA and ASID, with primary experience in high-rise Residential and Luxury Hospitality. Michelle acts as a mentor to her colleagues, providing guidance on taking the ARE's and is current Co-Chair for AIA Miami Women in Architecture and Chapter Director for AIA Miami Board.

MEET THE 2025 AIA MIAMI CHAPTER DIRECTOR

Javier has been a registered architect for almost 20 years and has worked with firms such as Bermello-Ajamil and Rodriguez Architects. For the last 7 years he has been working at Gresham Smith where he works on the role of Senior Architect for healthcare.

Javier had the opportunity to serve as a director during pivotal events like the establishment of the Miami Center for Architecture and Design (MCAD) and the AIA National convention in Miami. During that period, he was handed the responsibility of organizing events for the chapter. One of his key initiatives was to foster greater involvement from Chapter members in our activities.

He is now eager to bring his experience and commitment to the table once again. Javier is passionate about providing opportunities for our members to engage more deeply with the AIA and to appreciate the immense value our Chapter can offer them. His goal is to broaden our activities, inviting more participation from the membership at large.

MEET THE 2025 AIA MIAMI CHAPTER DIRECTOR

After graduating from Florida
International University with a Master of Architecture and a Minor in the Visual Arts, Eduardo went on to
work at Oppenheim Architecture, Via Design Studio, and FIU as an adjunct professor and a guest
critic for various design presentations. As a result of his previous experiences, he is now able to
grow and evolve his design philosophies at Calil Architects, where he's a Co-Principal alongside his
father Eduardo Calil Sr.

Being a primarily high-end residential firm, Calil Architects has been able to adapt to
everchanging obstacles, including the city’s economic state and the generational preferences of
each individual client. With our designs varying in location, size, and style, reflecting the client’s
values as well as incorporating the site and its context is always at the forefront of our designs.

As a small business owner, Eduardo can give insight on what it takes to battle through the obstacles that
come with running a small firm, but also see the importance of learning from others on how to
better manage, market, and master designs.

His goal with the AIA is to build interest for small businesses with becoming involved in the
AIA, as well as helping the AIA assist small businesses with bettering their practices and furthering
their involvement in their communities.

The AIA Miami and AIM team is thrilled to announce that this summer, aspiring young architects will have an extraordinary opportunity to develop their skills under the guidance of a distinguished expert in architectural education, Prof. Elena Voronina. Designed for students preparing to apply to top architecture and design programs, this two-week intensive studio provides the essential training needed to build a compelling architecture portfolio—an integral component for admission to prestigious institutions such as DASH, the University of Miami, the FIU School of Architecture, and others.

Through an immersive, hands-on approach, students will refine their design abilities, strengthen their artistic expression, and gain a deeper understanding of architectural principles. They will be mentored in key areas of portfolio preparation, ensuring that their work showcases originality, technical skill, and a strong design narrative.

This intensive studio combines architectural expertise, strategic portfolio planning, and creative self-expression, providing students with the tools they need to succeed in both their academic and professional pursuits.

Jennifer McConney-Gayoso is a Registered Architect in the State of Florida with a Professional Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture with Honors from the University of Miami.

She has over 25 years of experience assisting developers on complex mixed-use projects and providing innovative solutions to site and building design.

Jennifer has focused her career on Hospitality and Resort Design, Historic Preservation, Commercial Retail, Residences and Multi-Family Housing.

Her attention to detail and her ability to maintain repeat clients has made her a sought-after Architectural talent in South Florida.

Jennifer founded Studio Mc+G Architecture to pave her own road in South Florida Architecture and to provide her skills as a planner in developing creative destinations that only South Florida has to offer.

MEET THE 2025 AIA MIAMI VICE PRESIDENT

Shawna also acts on the board as a Chapter Director and Representative for the University of Miami.

Shawna Meyer is a founding principal of Atelier Mey, an architecture practice in Miami, FL, and a faculty member at the University of Miami School of Architecture. Her work spans practice, teaching, and research, focusing on the intersection of social, cultural, economic, and environmental forces.

At Atelier Mey and the Littoral Urbanism Lab, she approaches design as a process of inquiry. Shawna collaborates on grants with the US and Florida Forest Services and led the design of Miami-Dade County’s first mass timber structure.

She has received awards including the 2021 AIA Miami Honor Award for Sustainable Architect of the Year, 2022 AIA Miami Small Firm of the Year Award, and 2024 AN Best of Best Emerging Practice Project Award and Atelier Mey selected to participate in 2025 US Pavilion exhibition at the La Biennale di Venezia. A licensed architect in Minnesota, Montana, and Florida, she was inducted into the John G. Williams Fellowship in 2022.

AIA Fort Lauderdale, AIA Miami, and FLDCP chapters are joining for the 6th Annual Soccer Tournament. This is a family-oriented event that will bring design and construction-related fields together for a fun day of healthy competition and constant networking!

The Tournament will consist of 20 teams composed of architects, architectural emerging professionals, architectural students, engineers, contractors, and vendors.

During the length of the tournament, all players and sponsors will have the opportunity to network with attendees from AIA Fort Lauderdale, AIA Miami, and FLDCP as well as to reconnect with existing contacts. As a family-oriented event, kids are welcome to enjoy the fields when available as this will be a close door event.

After all games are completed, an award ceremony will honor the first, second, and third places, the single-player with the most goals scored, and the best goalie!

MEET THE 2025 AIA MIAMI VICE PRESIDENT Naomi Harr

MEET THE 2025 AIA MIAMI VICE PRESIDENT

Naomi Harrison is a Senior Project Manager, a licensed architect and a LEED accredited professional at MCHarry Associates, a 61-year-old Miami architectural firm specializing in public sector projects. She oversees the firms K-12 educational projects serving Miami-Dade and Broward County Schools, the nation’s 4th and 6th largest school districts.

Throughout her 25-year career, Naomi has overseen $140M in construction projects as a Senior PM or PM, and $150M as a Junior PM.

Naomi comes from very humble beginnings, born in a bamboo hut atop a mountain overlooking the waters in a small village on the island of Jamaica. Her formative years in Jamaica were filled with art and community, and from an early age she had a desire to be an architect to help build in underprivileged communities.

Through her work as co-chair of the Black Architects in the Making - BAM - program, which she helped found, she continues her sense of community by helping, inspiring, and touching other lives with her passion for architecture. Volunteering and mentoring are high priorities for Naomi; her greatest hope is to impact change in the dismal percentage of African Americans in the profession by engaging students at all age levels and all walks of life through the BAM program, but especially those of Black women in the profession who statistically face such greater obstacles to licensure.

Her weeks are filled managing multiple design and construction projects with evenings left for the various committee meetings and volunteering varying from BAM, AIA Miami, WIA, and her own personal mentorship of several high school and college students. Through her involvement in various organizations, she champions diversity, equity and inclusion in a profession she loves and knows that if others can see it, they can be it, they can do it, it indeed takes a village.

MEET THE 2025 AIA MIAMI PRESIDENT-ELECT Jamie Mac

MEET THE 2025 AIA MIAMI PRESIDENT-ELECT

Jamie MacNichol, AIA is a Senior Architect at 10SB where he manages large scale Hospitality
and Multi-family projects. Originally from New Hope, PA, he received his Bachelor of
Architecture degree from Virginia Tech. Jamie became involved with the AIA during his
undergraduate studies, serving on the Virginia Tech AIAS board as Treasurer, President, and
then Past President. In these roles, he focused on securing chapter funding and increasing
membership. He also served on the AIA Blue Ridge board as the student representative.

After graduating from architecture school, Jamie worked at Winstanley Architects and Planners
in Alexandria, Virginia. While there, he worked primarily on mixed use, hospitality and
education projects. He served on the AIA DC Emerging Architects Committee, the AIA Northern
Virginia Schools Connection Committee, and the Northern Virginia Young Architects Forum. He
then served as the Vice Chair of the Young Architects Forum in 2019. Jamie is also an alumni
of the AIA Virginia Emerging Leaders in Architecture (ELA) of 2017. While in Virginia, he
completed his ARE’s, becoming a registered architect in 2019.

Jamie relocated to Miami at the end of 2019, where he continued to work on hospitality and
mixed-use projects. After moving, he quickly became involved with AIA Miami. He was a
member of the CKLDP Class of 2020, and he currently serves as President Elect on the board.

Jamie joined the AIA Miami Board of directors in 2022, serving as a Director through 2023, Vice President through 2024 before, being elected to his current President Elect role for the 2025 calendar year.

From Jamie’s early involvement in AIAS through his recent roles on the YAF and EPC
Committees, he’s met many students, associates, and other young architects with unique
perspectives and ideas. He believes young and emerging architects have a wealth of varying
perspectives to contribute to their fellow architects, the AIA, and the profession as a whole.

MEET THE 2025 AIA MIAMI PRESIDENT

Vanessa Smith Torres, AIA is a Puerto Rican born Architect based in Miami, FL. She received a Bachelors from Northeastern University and a Master of Architecture from Tulane University.
Vanessa acts as Project Architect at Perkins & Will, Miami. She has worked on award winning
projects in various market sectors - from Hospitality to Education to Healthcare.

In addition to her experience teaching at FAU School of Architecture, Vanessa’s involvement with youth
programs such as The National Organization of Minority Architects’ Project Pipeline and Youth
Rebuilding New Orleans Schools has provided rare insight to shaping learning spaces to
address needs of students from students themselves.

Vanessa specializes in building design
for performance and wellness, and is knowledgeable in building certification programs such as LEED, WELL, SITES, and the Living Building Challenge. Committed to building a more equitable profession, Vanessa has served on the National Organization of Minority Architects
Chapter boards in South Florida (SoFloNOMA) and Louisiana (NOMALA). She was the 2021
President of SoFloNOMA and currently serves as President of AIA Miami and co-chair of
the Women in Architecture Committee.
