Today’s storms are more intense and more frequent, resulting in an increase of deaths and financial loss. Buildings and structures with resilient design and materials are not only better able to withstand and recover following disasters such as hurricanes and tornadoes, products such as concrete and masonry are durable, environmentally friendly and use less embodied energy. Masonry can be used in a variety of applications; the choice of a building’s envelope will define a building’s performance in a major disaster. This presentation will discuss how the resiliency of masonry can help reduce long-term cost of repairs following a disaster as well as demonstrate how masonry can impact high-performance design while contributing to the health, safety and welfare of the building occupants.
