Inaugural Mark Samuelian Awards in Urban Resilience: Call for Applications

Description
Mark Samuelian (1963-2022), Miami Beach Commissioner 2017-2022, was a champion of sustain- ability and resilience, particularly focused on programs and investments that benefited the city and its residents. At his Celebration of Life the non-profit Resilience Action Fund pledged to start a resilience awards program to honor his name and build on his legacy. Since then, numerous local organizations have joined to support this initiative.
The website has now been launched and applications are being accepted for the first annual Mark Samuelian Awards in Urban Resilience. The submittal period will be open until August 15, 2023. Winners will be announced at an awards reception to be held on October 26, 2023 at The Wolfsonian/FIU in Miami Beach.
- 1st prize: $5,000
- 2nd prize: $2,500
- 3rd prize: $1,000
The awards will recognize individuals and organizations that have demonstrated practical success in implementing hazard-resilient measures and strategies in residential properties across South Florida. These can be located in any of the following seven counties: Miami-Dade, Broward, Monroe, Collier, Palm Beach, Hendry, and Lee.
Award criteria are:
- Enhances resilience of residential properties from wind, water & fire hazards
- Allows duplication on other properties
- Benefits a wide range of income levels
- Supports environmental benefits, such as energy, carbon, air quality, urban heat, etc.
- Promotes community benefits, like preservation, recreation, etc.
“Resilience to natural hazards is increasingly important to communities in South Florida”, said Aris Papadopoulos, founder of Resilience Action Fund. “Through the programs and policies he initiated and supported, Mark had a tremendous impact on Miami Beach. We look forward to receiving applications for projects that share Mark’s vision of building a more resilient and sustainable future.”
